Hi
What type of collie is your dog
Rough
Smooth
Border
Bearded
If your dogs has no pedigree then I doubt if anyone would let you mate him to their bitch.
Don't forget that the bitch owner would be responsible for finding homes for the puppies
Is your dog Eye Hip & hearing tested?
It could even be that at 8 years old he might not be interested ! Breeding dogs isn't just putting a dog & bitch together when the bitch is in season & nine weeks later getting the puppies!

our 8 year old is a rough border collie. The whole point of our notice is to find out the ins and outs of breeding our dog. We are prepared to go to great lengths to get puppies , and have thought it through extreamly seriously. We were hoping to keep four pups , other family members are extremely keen to have them so homing the pups would not be a burdon on the breeder.
we assume the whole process involves medical check ups and breeding fees, we,d appreciate any help and advice . Perhaps we should ask our local vet, for more advice on the medical side.
We dont expect a litter of puppies to appear magically. We are aware of harleys age and realise if we dont begin soon he,ll never have chance.
thank you for you promt reply Deejay, I,ll look in to grtting his eye,hip and hearing tested.
We are not hoping to breed harley with a pedigree, but a similar, non pedigree bich would be fantastic.
Because we are a family group wanting offspring ,it makes covering any fees a lot more affordable.
Can any one else offfer any suggestions to our problem.?
thanks Fiona

Hi Fiona
As your Border Collie has no pedigree you will not be able to find out if he is carrying CEA you can test his eyes & check if he currently has it, but all border collies should be eye tested before twelve WEEKS of age as this is a problem that can "go right",but leave the dog a carrier. so he could be clinicially clear but pass it on to his puppies
I have two gorgeous males, they are well bred(ISDS)& have lovely temperaments,BUt they both have CEA carriers close up in the pedigree so I choose not to let them be used at stud. When I want a puppy I will buy one & so i will not be responsible for pssing on the problem
The same goes for deafness if you don't know his breeding you don't know if he carries deafness

Don't want to put a damper on things for you.

It tends not to work like you think it might. If your dog is used at stud - then you are either paid a stud fee or with some breeds get the pick of the litter - that means just one pup. But this is usually only where there is a sound pedigree and health checks etc. If you wanted four pups - you would be expected to buy them just as if you were buying a pup from any other breeder. The ownership and responsibilty for homing the pups lies with the owner of the bitch and not the stud. They have final say over who gets what.

If your dog is pure bred - ie a true collie - then this is his breed - but he doesn't have the papers that tell you what his pedigree is. All a Pedigree is is a history of the family tree of the dog (mongrels and cross breeds all have pedigrees - we just tend not to know what they are). It is from this family tree that you can determine how likely your dog is to have bad or good genes to pass on to any progeny. You can take him to a vet and get him tested for testable problems such as hips, eyes ears, but this will only tell you how your dog is now. It will not tell you what he has in his history that he may pass on to any pups that he sires.

You'll be very lucky to find someone with a bitch with papers, ie the pedigree, who will in effect let you use her as a surrogate for you because you don't have a bitch but want puppies. You might find one without papers - but you just don't know what problems you could be storing up for the future.

Although it can seem that having pups is quite easy - after all there are lots of them around - the reality is that - if it's done properly - then it can be very costly and not only in financial terms. Also there is no guarantee of how many pups would be born.

I don't wish to seem rude, but it seems that you want pups this way becasue it will work out cheaper. It is more likely to work out more costly.

If you all want new pups - then do go to a recognized breeder who can give you good advice.

Good luck - do let us know how you get on

Why would you want to keep 4 pups? That is a lot of puppies to have at one time.
I think you should seriously reconsider - there are enough mongrels and crossbreeds being bred then abandoned, and God knows the rescue shelters all over the country are bursting with collie crosses.
Do you not think it would be better just to be responsible with your dog and leave the breeding of crossbreeds etc to people who couldnt care less about the thousands of unwanted dogs out there?

The poster is not talking about keeping 4 puppies for themselves, but for them and 3 other family members. Also, they are not talking about cross-breeds, they are saying they're not expecting a pedigree bitch, they mean KC registered, not a cross breed. Not saying I necessarily think it is a good idea, but still better to know what you're commenting on.

I have read the posting and one point not really touched on is your dogs age,you say that he is 8yrs
has he ever mated a bitch? if not I will be very suprised if you can get a normal first mating at him age, I realise you would like to continue your dogs family but I do think you have very little chance.so much is against you, 1, finding a suitable bitch,2, getting a mating.and 3 trusting the owner will allow you to buy the puppies back.

Hi
Another point: If your dog has not been used at stud using him at this age and just as one off may alter his temprement ie he may start to be agressive with other dogs.

Having a litter of pups can be really expensive as someone has alredy mentioned and there is also the risk of loosing the bitch. I doubt very much that you will find someone who will agree to your terms, lets put it another way, would you risk the health of your bitch because someone wanted to use her as a surrogate mum. I know there is no way I would have a litter under those circumstances, I think too much about my dogs. We breed only for ourselves and know we have good homes lined up for the others. The bitch must be in excellent health and we look at the sires background and strive only to improve the breed.

My advice to you would be to seek out a reputable breeder and buy your puppies at least that way you will know their family history.
