Does anybody know of, or have the steroid or other injections for hayfever and know what they are called. My boyfriend suffers terribly from grass pollen allergy starting now and lasting until about august. It gets so bad that he can't go out in the evenings at the peak of it even with all the tablets and sprays etc - and he doesn't need more excuses not to walk the dog with me :p. Our doctor says if we find out the name, and it's legal she will do it for him - problem is i don't know the name!

To find lots of information, type 'hayfever injection' into a Search Engine and then take your pick!

Thanks Leigh, I've tried that already - all it brings up is information, i need an actual name or type other than generic steroid injection etc

It could be Prednisolone. My boys (children, not dogs :-)) and I have taken this in tablet form for asthma, so it may be that it's injected for hayfever. Not sure if this is actually the case but might be worth putting into that Search Engine.

Hi cleopatra,
Yes Paula is right,Prednisolone a systemic steriod is used to treat severe hayfever,it can be given in tablet form and as a last resort as an injection.
In the injectable form it could cause systemic side effects so as i said it is not the first method of treatment. There are also steriod nasal sprays like Flixonase,Nasacourt which can be used alongside eyedrops and antihistamine.A new steroidal nasal inhaler which has done well in clinical trials is Triamcinolone Acetonide.
As a last resort There is a treatment called Injection desensitisation immunotherapy which can be an effective option in severe grass pollen rhinitis which cant be controlled with medication,Its given as a course of injections over a long period [can be up to 3 years] maybe your gp could find out some more info?Hope the info helps
derek.

Hi Cleopatra. Does your boyfriend like honey?? ;-)
My Father was 72 and had suffered with hayfever for as long as I could remember. Permanent runny nose, red eyes etc. You know what it's like! In more recent years, the doctor had stocked him up with antihistamine tablets and inhalers from the middle of March each year. It was a real problem. I read an article suggesting that many hayfever sufferers had found relief by taking a spoonful of local honey, produced with 10 miles of their home. That's the important bit so that it's made with local pollen.
I explained that natural remedies often take some time to have effect, but as it was an easy thing to do, maybe it was worth a try in the hope of some benefit the following year.
Well ...... after just 3 weeks he had no red itchy eyes, no runny nose - nothing at all! And so he's stayed - no drugs - just a spoonful of honey everyday. I couldn't believe that something so simple could have such a dramatic effect. He'll be 81 next month - maybe he's just grown out of it?? :D

Hi Val, we also give honey to our dogs when theres kennel cough about and it usually always works,as I go to the kennels a lot and usually have my dogs in the car with me I cant be too careful anyway this year forgot about the honey and they ended up with the cough! may be a coincidence, also notice the Vets are calling kennel cough something else now infectious Bronchitis....
Another possible coinsidence a short while ago I had a little health scare went to hospital with chest pains anyway I was fine but as there is heart problems in my family I was told to take an asprin everyday, since Ive been taking the asprin Ive had no MIGRAINES which I had fairly regular, suprising how these little tips may possibly help someone else

that sounds great val, mark hates taking all the pills, and they tend to stop working completely after a month anyway, the nasal sprays don't work at all, and even with all this he still get s all the symptoms - not good really. Only problem is that we live in west london, and i'm not sure any one makes honey within 100 miles let alone 10!!! Any way i can find out if their are local honey people?

My dad is a great beleiver in honey (and garlic) being a natural cure all, and uses quite (to me) vast quantities. He buys from a local beekeeper. You can find details of local bee keeping societies, and they will usually know who has them near you. another way to find a local one is to go to thehealth food shops, as they sometimes sell locally produced honey!

Cleopatra, I have had injections for the last 8-10 years for hayfever and they are the only thing that has ever worked. (And they work extremely well - within 12 hours the symptoms have disapeared completely) The name of the drug is "Kenalog" and it is a steroid injected into the glutus maximus. UNFORTUNATELY this year my Dr has refused to prescribe it saying that there are concerns over it use. I would be interested to learn if your man can get it - I promise it WILL work. Please let me know!! Glyn.

I have been using 'Kenalog' injection for about 10 years, it is the only hayfever drug that has worked with me after trying tablet, after spray, after all sorts. Last year when I went for the injection I was told I had to see the doc first as like you say there were concerns over it's use, however he still gave me the jab. Today 19/06/02 I called the docs to have the jab and they did it straight away, but they did remark once again of the concerns and this will be the last year I will be getting it. When I asked what the alternatives were they said it would be back to the chemist for an over the counter item.

I use Homeopathic. New Era Hayfever tablets. I was stunned at how quick and how long they lasted. Might be worth investing in them!
