Previous Next Up Topic Other Boards / Feedback / Is there an insurance that covers spadin
By laineynic [gb] Date 30.08.05 09:17 GMT
I took out an insurance policy for my dog. I asked at the time does it cover to have her spaded. They advise that it did.

I booked my dog in for tomorrow and thought I will just check again to make sure. When I rang they said no sorry it doesn't. The cost for her operation is £150.00 and to be honest we don't have this to pay for ourselves. I have only just returned to work after being ill for 18 months and money is really tight.

Surely there must be some thing available to help with this cost, I don't mind paying for it but not all at once. Is there an insurance company who covers this cost?

If anyone has any ideas would you please let me know.

Regards

Hi
As far as I know, there is no insurance company that would cover the cost for spaying. No insurance will cover preventative treatment including routine neuterings and vaccinations, x-rays for hip scoring and similar. Had she have to be spayed due to an emergency such as pyometra that may well have been different.

If you are on a low income or benfits of any sort it may be worth your while checking if you qualify for the Dogs Trust neutering vouchers -I believe you then only pay the vet £25 to have a dog neutered or a bitch spayed. (This is what the poster in our vet's waiting room says anyway!)

Hi Lainey, I'm sorry, I don't think there is a policy that covers routine spaying, or routine vaccination worming or flea treatment either for that matter, neither will an ordinary policy cover pregnancy and whelping. There is a policy that covers breeders for emergency care due to pregnancy and whelping, but it is extremely expensive and the policy must be in place for a long while beforehand.

It seems to me you have either got to try and come to some financial arrangement with your vet, or cancel the op until you have been able to save the money.

If you are on benefits, the PDSA can perhaps help, and Dogs Trust, do a deal too.

Hope you can work something out.

If you get vouchers then make sure the vet where you take her is a good one. My SIL had a voucher for her dog to be spayed as she was on benifits and her vet didnt take the vouchers so she used the closest one that did. Well £400 later after complications which she had to pay herself as the insurance didnt cover if things went wrong as well as paying half for the op as well her dog is now well.

Ask your vet if they will let you pay in say 4 instalments.  My vet was very good when I had a big bill and couldn't pay it and I paid it up over a few months (insurance wouldn't pay as pre-existing condition!).  Depends on the vet though.
