Any computer whizzkids available. I need to translate a document into Bengali. It comes up under TOOLS and language options, but when I try to translate the document it won't work. Should I be able to do it on word programme, or is there any other way I can translate it.

There are translation programs Lorna but i dont think you can do it in word. I think the Language option only allows you to type in in that language (Assuming you have a keyboard for it)

I think the language option in 'Word' is for the dictionary, and is not able to translate. As John said there are programs available but if it's for a one off perhaps your local libary could help or suggest somewhere you could get it done. I have trouble with English as it is could not tackle another language. :-) Jackie H

I was on a site a few months ago which allowed translation into any
language. It let me copy and paste. For the life of me I cannot remember what it was now. It will come back to me and Ill let you know.

I suppose you could copy type it in Word in Bengali or perhaps it may be a bit long. If you change the font or whatever it is you have to change to get Bengali and then type it again from your hard copy English version, will that work ??? I think this is too simple and completely wrong come on tell me I am stupid LOL :o Gina

Was stupid just had a go still got English !!!! LOL

Unfortunately the words are not made up the same. Sometime one word covers for two in the other language also grammar is different.

I once spent a week trying to translate a technical manual from French into English using only an English French dictionary. (I don’t speak French!) Our overseas sales could not manage it because the technical nature meant that words did not always use their common meaning. I reckon I got one word in three but that was enough to be able to use the machine!

Come on Heelerkay - get those grey cells working :-) I've tried looking in search engines for a translation programme, they are available - at a price. As this is a one off I can't afford to pay for it. Its just to help a Bengali lady about to have her baby, and doesn't know a thing about labour etc. She's got no family to translate for her so I'm trying my best to get some info for her. We are also trying to get a translator for her to be with her when she goes into labour. (hidden costs of the NHS eh!)

Lorna - what about trying the language department of your nearest university to see if they would translate it for you?

Failing that surely there must be some kind individual out there who speaks Bengali and English and could translate it for you as it is a one off. Perhaps you could get your local paper to carry a little story to find someone.

Or final thought perhaps some other Health Authority might have a similar document already in Bengali?

Hope this helps. I am no good at languages myself I'm afraid.

Local or Hospital Radio would be another tack, asking a fluent speaker of English and Bengali, especially a lady, to contact you!

Hi Lorna - try this link. I've played with a few sentances and something comes up - whether it makes sense to a bengali speaker is another thing :D
