I have been reading postings about WEE WEES. We are looking for a Cavalier pup and have said that good health and temperament are vital but sex is unimportant. My problem is that my elder daughter who lives at home is a harpist and her large and v. expensive harp lives in our lounge/sitting room. We cannot move it so that it is shut away. Reading about male dogs scent marking, am I asking for trouble combining a male dog and an object which may look like a handy tree to him ? Our last dog was a bitch and she was shocked if asked to pee anywhere apart from her special place in the garden (V. difficult on days out - but I don't like strange loos either !). Should we refine our search to a female ?

It is one of the resons I only keep bitches, lol!
some males never mark, but you don't know until you have a him! Seems to be small breed males do it more, maybe an inferiority complex, or just seems that way to me!

Hi
I have a 4 year old cavalier king charles who never scent marks, even in the garden, in fact he doesnt even cock his leg! He was castrated as soon as the vet said he was old enough though. My second dog, a cocker cross, was also castrated young but he does scent-mark, only outside though (touch wood!). Maybe a female would be safer just in case!
I just wanted to point out that the dog I referred to in my message entitled "wee wees" is a Cavalier.

Oh dear brainless, "You just don't know until you have him" Will he - won't he ? I can imagine the anxiety while we wait to find out if a little dog is going to christen this wretched harp on a regular basis. The tension would probably turn him into a nervous wreck ! He'd feel he was being stalked.
Seriously, we were advised against castration as it might result in a wooly coat.
in all the puppies I have had through the years never had one pee up the furniture

thought only cat's did that .Once had a bull terrier pee in my husband's training boot ,and I never told him:EEK:
good luck
Pat
My hubby said the dog is innocent until proven guilty and even asked how should he know it's not ME getting up in the night and 'marking my territory'! Cheek!
Well I've kept entire male dogs for years now and never had one scent mark in the house once trained. Just a thought couldn't you put something like a wooden playpen round the harp when it's not in use, would stop the pup chewing it as well. Ingrid
Beany, with your hubby obviously being male.... perhaps he's trying to throw the blame on you just to shift your suspicions away from him?

He might be the one doing it after all. :D :D :D
would you not hear the harp play if a dog peed up it.[lol] or cover it over if you get a dog
My male dog scent marks if allowed he would cock his leg up everywhere.
And by the way he is a small breed dirty little dog and i am not jokeing.
But i love him to bits. I also keep disinfectant companies going.
Not to mention local carpet firms and cleaners.
We have now decided to wooden floor the whole house.
My next pup I will call Zoflora.
Problem with a full sized harp is that it has a full size base that's about 6-8 inches below the strings. 3 foot pedals (similar to a piano) come out of it. And yes, very very pricey. Covering it up wouldn't necessarily protect the base. Putting a fence around it --might be a pain to do, especially for long term asthetics & access.
I'm biased, but I prefer females for pets anyway. Less worry about the leg hike :D

(subjected to harps during music camps -- preferred carrying & playing cello) :D
But what if a dog or bitch puppie was to bite it teething and all that

I love the saxaphone but would not have the wind to play one

PAT .
Personaly, when it comes to musical instraments I stick to a gundog whistle! :d

Thanks all. Deciding to play it safe (pardon pun) and get bitch. Asked daughter to take up penny whistle instead but she's being really stubborn !
By the way she tells me that some sites will not allow you to post word "bitch". Their censoring recognises it only as derogatory slang.
It's the proper term for a female dog, and well, this is a doggy friendly site :D :D Although, I have to be honest and say that I do find it awkwardly uncomfortable to use, even in its proper context.

I have found that in America they seem quite reluctant to use the term and tend to say female. I like the word, and it is peoples problem if they wish to use it inappropriately to abuse women with, I personally would take it as a compliment!!! :D :D :D

Just thinking actually the 'fence' idea might not be a bad one. You could use an x-pen - wouldn't look too bad - rather than keeping the dog IN it would keep the dog OUT.
