Helllp!!!!
My dog buffy is driving us absolutely mad she brings new meaning to the expression dog on heat , which she is at the moment and this is about the 15th day but she is getting worse with every season she's two now and absolutely frantic for a mate any mate would do, my leg, the kids, the old boy border collie who lost his dangly bits over 9years ago. To put it bluntly if it stands still long enough she will shag it. She is also getting very frustrated and whining, howling and barking which is most unusual as she's a malamute and she normally only woooos at you.
Now we do intend to mate her but not until next year when we should have moved and have a much bigger garden to accomodate the extra one we should hopefully get from the breeding. Any suggestions.
regards slayer

Hate to say the obvious, but keep them apart. I had a 7 month old beagle "rape" my neutered lab. Poor guy looked really confused. All her fault, the minx. At least it was "safe sex."
Crating her might help. Oh, don't leave her alone in the back yard. Dogs can smell bitches in heat up to 10 miles away depending on the wind.
good luck

Hardly any one warns one about Randy females, but it is perfectly normal, and it is worse when you have sevearal at it. At present I am looking after friends Dobe bitch on her first season, and she is driving my lot mad with the train games! My two entire bitches aren't due in until next month, so hoping it doesn't get them in early (well not until after the 27th, and preferably to be finished by end of May)!

Just ignore it, and give her something else to distract her, like anice new marrow bone! Content yourself that hopefully this maens she will not be reticent when the time comes for her to be mated!

Hi Jacqui,

Nice to see you've joined us here.

Sounds like you're having fun with Buffy :D
Has Buffy been to any shows yet? I've been out of showing for some months - Timber had her pups (and now no coat!) and Blaze injured his leg. Hope to be starting again very soon though particularly with Kaani (my new addition), her first show is in June.

Regards
Jacquie.

ps
Could I make one huge request?
If you go ahead with the litter please, please, please - don't forget to put endorsements on the pups registrations (I know Buffy's breeder doesn't put them on :-( )

Hi
Thanks for all the advice some of it was helpful some blatently obvious. Thankfully she seems to have finnished now and calmed back down as much as a mal can anyway. I'll just look forward to the nesting behaviour now that always seems to follow. I couldn't keep them apart whilst she was in season if I wanted a house left, I tried it once before and the door, doorframe , and carpet got ripped to shreds and the door was new at the time so I was not best pleased. The old boy seemed to grasp the fact that if he just laid down the moment she grabed him she couldn't do alot apart from hump the air.
Message for Jacquie Yes I do intend to put endorsements on the pups when and if she has any I would like to talk to you closer the time about suitability. Buffy is a beautiful dog with a lovely temperament but... if I can improve I know the bits I would like to, so obviously it would be good to talk to someone who has extensive knowledge of the breed.
regards jacqui
