I have a totally manic border collie who doesn't sit still for 1 minute and has a very strong eye and is extremely keen. She walks nicely by your side on a walk, but when a car goes past or a dog balks in someone's house she lunges.

Also we do agility/obedience/flyball/fun dog shows. If she sees another dog working (doing anything with their owner especially agility or playing) she pulls and pulls and it iss no use pulling her back and telling her down, she doesn't listen, doesn't take any notice of food or toys.

I would like to get her a halti or something similar but someone said not to as she can be quite nervous at times and they said it might stress her out. Someone else told me they didn't like haltis but to use one of those ones that looks like a big loop and it loops round their nose twists and loops round their head. Does anyone know what these are called?

Thankx, form Gina

Hi Colliemad
This sounds like a gentle leader by Canac but there are also things called figure of 8's (I have one) the problem is with the Canac, if you are letting of lead, then it can be tricky to put back on and I found that you do have to take it off as there is a bit that hangs down which the dog could get caught up on. My basic obedience trainer sold me a figure of 8 whihc she says you can only get from her (maybe true, maybe marketing ploy) but I found this better as it doesn't need to be taken off when the dog is offlead as there is nothing hanging down :-)
This may or not make sense as it is difficult to describe without seeing what I mean but there you go..

I had the figure of 8 one which had the letters NL on it. You just had to make sure you put it over yout hand the way it went on and hook it on a peg that way at home. I too liked the fact that nothing dangled, as my BSD, had chewed up the Halti, and there was nothing to get hold of on this, but this was over 10 years ago now!

I still have NL collars and leads but think they went out of business several years ago, or perhaps changed their name because I have been unable to trace them. May be someone knows different, I do hope so. Jackie H

Unfortunately they went out of business I think. A couple of us from my dog club used them and haven't been able to contact them for a few years. The leads I got from them are still as good as ever about 9 years later.
