A next door neighbour is having problems with her Dally.
He's 5 y.o. castrated male.

Basically his back legs aren't functioning correctly and he doesn't seem to realise.
They have done x-rays of spine/hips/legs/neck and all bones are fine.
He's had blood tests and they indicate no-viruses present, nor wobbler syndrome
He's on very strong steroids and has been on antibiotics too.
His back legs have got serious muscle wastage where he is not able to exercise.
He is not in any pain and seems bright as a button and is still wagging his tail.

All that was noticed when he was out with the horses on a hack
he was crabbing slightly. A week later whilst out on another hack his
legs went from underneath him and he could not walk.
He is walking again but not very well and one leg seems to be better than the other.

Has anyone seen this before? Has anyone had a positive outcome?

Sounds like Dalmation Leukodystrophies :-(

Leigh,
went to the link... it sounds as if it's the same rare disease that was described in a film "Lorenzo's Oil" with Susan Sarandon. Very very sad :-(

I never saw the film Sara, to me it sounds like Motor Neurones Disease in humans, and that is truly awful :-( People get this leukodystrophie too, but I am not sure if there is a link to MND.

Poor dog doesn't sound like he's having a good time :-( Has your neighbours vet not referred him to a specialist? I would have thought that would be the next step as a vet really is a GP and won't know everything.

Lots of Luck.

I do hope that dalmation does not have the disease Leigh mentioned - not a lot of hope for it if so.

That is a brilliant site to explore though Leigh - I have been studing the methods of inheritance of various problems recently and it has an excellent page on this that is relatively easy to understand.

I thought so to Christine :-) I have been following the Cerebellar Ataxia in the spinone since it first appeared so this link was of interest to me too. Lets hope the Dal hasn't got any of these conditions. Kirstine, please let us know.
