Hi, We have a 12 week old border terrier and she is really good at asking to go out in the garden to do her business, but so far we have just let her go out in the garden without a lead and she has been ok at coming back in. But now she seems to be having such a good time exploring she wont come back in when called.she does eventually but it can take 15 mins or so. We are starting a training class in a couple of weeks when she has had 2nd jabs, but until then has anybody got any advice as to whether I should have her on a lead in the garden or any suggestions on ways to get her to come in.??

i would put a lead on her till she does her stuff, then let her off. you can then introduce a word for going (very useful)

I've gone through this with all my pups and my solution is to shut the door if they don't come in as soon as called, and leave them until they get bored and WANT to come in. (Assuming the fencing is perfectly escape proof of course.) Pups hate being left alone and will soon learn.

Hello,
I put a question out there a couple of weeks ago about getting my 14 week old BT puppy to come when called in the garden and someone suggested that call her, if she ignores you shut the door and make her wait when she decides she wants to come in. I am trying this, but to be honest she doesnt seem that bothered when I shut the door although she is generally waiting when I open it. She does come eventually but sometimes you need them in NOW!! when I have to go out etc.
If I crouch down and call her in the middle of the garden she will come to me fro her treat and a play but getting her back in the house is another thing.
Sorry this is our first dog, I am going to start taking her to training classes in a couple of weeks but it would be nice to know what I am doing wrong now. any help!!

LOL she sounds like a typical 14 week old puppy with the usual butterfly mind that is quite normal.

I teach a recall the opposite to what you want that is puppy indoors & me outdoors & call the puupy outside treat(or in my case play tuggy as my puppy is more toy then food orientated), then I run into the house talking to him all the time once he grasped the recall command means come to me then when he was outside I sat on the doorstep & called him to me for a cuddle & play & stand inside the door & doo the same & gradually work my way inwards. Taking things slowly & if he failed a step going back two. I also do play recall to me all over the garden & even into the garage Mega fuss on every sucess & now I have a lovely play recall & I'm now teaching a formal one, also  always with lots of fuss on success

Your puppy will only have a very short attention span so any training needs to be in very short blocks & once theres a sucess break off for fun time Then your puppy will relate a recall with fun

My boy comes back so fast I have bruises where he crashes into me ;-)
MM \O^O/ OMG Rjj(Cornish Clown)is 3 eek cool Jessie(Witch)is 2 :-) Wukee has landed ;-)

Thanks for the advice, I have been trying out the suggestions for a couple of days and she is actually coming when I call her 8 times out of ten.even when she is in the bushes in the garden(her favourite place)she has been stopping and coming straight over, so thats a massive improvement. Again Thanks very much.
