WHATIS THE OUTCOME FOR AN 11 MONTH GSD WITH A VERY BAD CASE OF EPI
By Lara (****) Date 06.05.02 11:51 GMT
Your GSD should be able to lead a perfectly normal life.
He/she must have the genetic form of this condition because of the young age and you will have to supplement each meal with pancreatic enzyme extracts - usually a powder you mix in. A low fibre diet is recommended as you don't need as much of these added enzymes to break it down.
Occasionally antibiotics are required if the condition leads to an intestinal bacterial overgrowth but this is easily controlled. It may be wise to supplement vitamins B12, A and E as these are not so easily absorbed but be careful with Vitamin A as it can be toxic if oversupplemented - you may prefer to use Beta carotene instead.
