Can anyone please advise as to when Sheltie pups may become available.  My mum has recently lost her 9year old and is desperately lonely without her.

I would be looking for a bitch preferably.

Thanks

Get in touch with the breed clubs , they are the best people to advise you where puppies are available from reputable breeders. Make sure that all the relevent health checks have been carried out before you buy!

We are in exactly the same boat!  Our 2 died within 12 months of each other - both aged 10.  Everyone that we've spoken to, including vets and breeders, have said that we were very unlucky as the average age span for a sheltie is atleast 13 and many people have very happy and healthy dogs well above this!  Ours had health problems from when they were quite young though so obviously we were just very unlucky.  We too are desperately seeking a pup/young adult but are specifically looking for a male as we have already found a 'local' breeder with a bitch available for rehoming which we are going to see in a few weeks time :-)  It was just a case of ringing around and seeing who knew what, getting more contacts from them and ringing and so on and so forth.  We are also on our local Breed Rescue list so this is also an option for you (breed clubs will give you the number).  I'm sure your perseverance will pay off!

I think you were unlucky. We have two young sheltie bitches now but we lose the  previous two at 18 & 19, the bitch from senility and just old age, and the dog when it became impossible to control his arthritis.

Yes I think we were very unlucky too!  However, it has put us off getting another sheltie older than 3 because we've obviously got the fact that ours both died at 10 firmly in our minds which, if history were to repeat itself, could mean we'd only have the company and joy of an older dog for less than 7 years :-(  Its such a shame because we're going to see 3 bitches next weekend - a 6 month old, a 3 year old and a 5 year old - but have already concluded that we're not going to even contemplate the oldest :|  We're desperately trying to say to ourselves "she could live a full and healthy life for another 10 years!".  If we fall in love with her of course we would snap her up for our home but with the preconceptions we have I just hope we're able to keep our minds open about her :-)

I can understand that. They are super little dogs and great fun :-)
