I have got a 5 year old westie she's a lovely little dog and friendly with everyone and everything! (People, dogs, cats even my rabbits and g-pigs!)
I would like to get a female standard poodle puppy, who will obviosly grow to be a lot bigger than my westie. Will the size difference cause problems between them? As my westie will initally be the dominant one, being older, but once the pup grows bigger will she start to try and assert herself? I would hate them to start fighting.
I'm probably worring over nothing but thought you could help!
Cheers
Maddie

It very much depends on the individual personalities of both dogs - some adult dogs can be very submissive, and some puppies can put themselves above an adult.  Is there any specific reason you want a female Poodle?  The more differences between the two dogs the less likely hood there is for a fight, so a male may be better.

I think you would find you won't have a problem.  Looking at the ages, you won't get a poodle for at least a year most likly if you go to a reputable breeder who you will find now and wait on their waiting list.  so your westie will be 6 when you bring you poodle into the house.  Now if the poodle was to start wanting top dog (after you of course) she will want that at about 2 years roughly.  Your westie now nine and most likly willing to give the place up.  At the same time you say your westie is friendly with everything and everyone.  Is she also submisive (does she go upto people/dogs and roll on her back or lay down?)  If so I can't see a reason not to get a female poodle. :-)

I personally wouldn't get a female if I was choosing a large breed and had a smalll female dog. If there is to be trouble 2 females are the most likely of any pairing not to get on.  Just my honest opinion.    I have had experience of a little bitch and a large bitch fighting and it wasn't  something I would want to go through again for either of them. Both of them had bomb proof natures but one had came into season.
