You can keep looking but you aint gonna find one!cool

Theres no such thing as a 'teacup' chi
By Anwen (***) [gb] Date 04.02.06 17:39 GMT
A Chi should weigh 2-4lb. Why would you want any dog smaller than that?
No reputable breeder will be selling a breed that doesn't exist.

As the others have put there's no such thing!!  Just get a normal sized one and as you can tell by Anwen's post they are small enough!mad
If I wanted a Poodle, OES, TT or IWS I would have bought one. SWD's shd. be natural and rustic. No

Your best bet is to contact the breed clubs listed at the bottom of the Breed Standard and ask for details of reputable breeders. Good luck! :-)

Well you can go to a certain paper and pay £2,200.00 for one, but if you do then well how mad are you?

What a stupid name and what stupid irresponsible people these breeders are for giving them a daft name for a dog that's the breeds natural size mad

I have kept Chihuahuas for 27 years now, and can assure you the term Tea cup Chihuahua is an ameriacn invention. In the US the breed has gone very large, so some breeders are trying to get them back to the correct size. They are calling these tea cups. They are indeed just the correct size a Chihuahua should be. Those that have the wrong shape head they are calling deer head chihuahuas, etc.
There is a massive shortage of chihuahuas in the UK.
I think you will find that there are no rescues available, and people are on the waiting list with Chihuahua Rescue. Unfortunately they are in really short supply. Most reputable breeders do have rather long waiting lists too.
Because of this some unscrupulous people are crossing them and passing them off as pedigree. I have heard of unregistered pups being sold for £800. Quality show ones are starting from £1000. I suggest you find a reputable breeder and go onto their list.
They will want to know why you chose the breed, what knowledge you have of the breed, etc. Good Luck.

Does anyone know why they are so Rare in the UK? Are there not enough breeders or are chi's not popular enough?

They have tiny litters and have never been popular, so now that they have suddenly becoem fashionable out of all proprtion there is no way responsible supply could beat demand often on a whim.

Being tiny dogs they have very small litters, maybe one or two puppies, so breeders tend to keep them themselves, especially bitches. Larger breeds have bigger litters (8 being average - some breeds have well into double figures) so there are more available. It's a matter of supply and demand.

There are several reasons why they are so rare in the UK. Firstly like was stated, they have small litters. Also reputable breeders do not over breed, and most Chihuahuas have two and at the most three litters. So a possibility of maybe less than 6 to 9 puppies from a girl in her lifetime. Pregnancy and childbirth in the Chihuahua is often difficult, and can result in no puppies.
Also the increased cost of showing stopped many people from showing the breed, and therefore CC's were lost at some shows, so then breeding was cut back even more. Then suddenly they become fashionable, and everyone wants them. However us reputable breeders refuse to breed such a tiny dog just to make money. I am expecting my first litter for over two years, shortly, and this will be my Melodys second, and last litter. My reason for breeding her now is because my boy I mated her to is now getting old, and the litter from them before was excellent quality. I have not got a son of his to continue from him, and having kept Chihuahuas for 27 years, I can not imagine life without them. They are a very special breed, and you can get greedy owners like myself, lol who just can not bring themselves to part with any puppies they do breed.

Being a Chi owner myself I have to agree they are a really special breed. most people don't know them and pass stupid judgments like.... they are not really dogs, they are toys or people think they're yappy and stupid little dwarfs mad..... All of this can't be further from the truth. They are extremely smart and very lovable. You have never been loved till you were loved by a Chihuahua. They absolutely make you feel like you're not only their guardian and their friend, but their god. They do seem delicate and fragile, but if bred well they are quite hardy and very healthy!
I talked (and visited) a well known British breeder last summer and he told me that there in fact loads of Chis in UK and puppy prices not so long ago were around 500GBP, but it all changed over night. There are more Long coats than Smooth coats (this is the official name for short coat Chi) in UK, while here in Continental Europe it's about equal I'd say.
Unfortunately all this popularity caused many people to breed unregistered dogs which results unregistered litters and they actually manage to sell them for 1000GBP!! eek But I guess things will not change until there are people naive enough to buy those puppies.......
Basically, go out there and research the breed...... and most of all, don't just buy the first puppy!! go to a reputable breeder....

i have seen many different prices-- i saw an unregistered puppy for £1500! and a registerd one for £2500! ( but with breeding restrictions)  i presumed that was why there were so few- no one could afford to buy them!eek
