Both my dogs have bare shiny patches on their snouts. The patches are just where the 'wet' nose finishes and the hair on the snout starts. The first inch of hair is missing on the top and the skin is bare. Any idea what caused it?

could be a few things, the fact theyre both the same makes me think theyre sticking their heads under a gate or something, or if caged perhaps digging in that---mine got like this once when id given them raw bones as theyd tried to bury them, ---anything there that sounds like it might be the cause,

Thanks Dizzy. One dog is an old Yorkie and has been like this for as long as I remember, the other is a four year old Labrador. It isn`t due to looking under a gate, although I can see how that could be the cause, and they don`t bury anything! Somebody once mentioned mites, yuk! Are there 'nose mites'?

My Yorkie's hair also vanished in the same area as yours. She was healthy without any mites or hair problems. I just thought it was a mild form of balding confused I also remember her loving to rub her nose against the carpet at her chewies & toys kind of in an odd form of play right before she'd roll over and stretch her back. That could have hindered growth, too.
cool

one of my bitches have this, she has had it from a pup but it is not as big as you dogs are(not more than 1cm circle), she does not dig or put her nose under anything! i just throught that it was just a place where she had thin fur, i also have another 2 dogs in the house and their is nothing wrong with their nosies so i would not think that it was mites

Bobby

PS the vet ones told me to put sun cream on it when it was sunny as there is no fur there to cover it!
