Previous Next Up Topic Dog Boards / Rainbow Bridge / Freddy a kitten
By MarianneB (*****) [gb] Date 01.12.06 19:20 GMT Edited 27.03.07 12:07 GMT
I can't believe this. Freddy a 6 month old kitten somehow injured his leg over the weekend and has been back and forth to the vet since. It wasn't broken (he was x-rayed) but so very swollen and he was in such a lot of pain. Today they decided to keep him over the weekend in to manage his pain and to try to reduce the swelling. The vet just phoned and said Freddy's died! How can a 6 month old healthy wellbred pedigree kitten die from an injured leg??? I can't even begin to tell how upset I am, I'm in tears here -this on top of everything else. Can't believe it.

So sorry for your loss :-(

I think it's utterly essential to find out what happened,i know having a PM done is a horrible thought, but to die of a bunged up leg? Somethings not right here confused

So sorry to hear about young Freddy. Sounds like some kind of infection which he couldn't fight off.
Goodbye little one.

By Isabel (*****) [gb] Date 04.12.06 08:53 GMT
Very sorry you lost such a beautiful creature Marianne.  I would speculate an infection too or perhaps something nasty in the lymph system which blocked drainage from the leg.  A tragic loss whatever :-(

Thanks ALL. It's been very stressful. There are so many theories on what actually happened and the vet's opinion was that what would give us the best idea was to still go head and analyse the fluid drained from the swollen leg. Should have the results on Thursday.

Gosh sorry, forgot to update. The tests revealed Freddy had a bad infection most likely caused by a puncture wound -in all likelihood just a small bite received in play by another kitten or cat  some time ago -by the time he got ill there was no wound to be seen but the infection had been closed in and eventually hit his heart. Never knew a wound so small it was never even noticed could cause such a lot, but apparently so...... Freak accident in other words, which has now made me rather paranoid -I will now check for even the tiniest of scratches.

At least you know there was NOTHING you could have done to stop this happening.Dont beat yourself up about it marianne, there was nothing you could hve done any different.,
Run free Freddy.

Thanks Lea. Yes it did make me feel a bit better knowing it was an accident sort of -and best of all the vet told me there is NO risk whatsoever to the other cats. I feel jumpy though, another kitten of mine, the youngest, very special one (born by c-section and bottlefed, sole survivor, the vet said he'd never live but he did) -developed diarrhoa and I rushed him straight to the vets on Friday and I would not normally be so panicky for something so minor. He's absolutely fine. :-)

Freddy will always be remembered.

Last year I lost one rabbit, lost another a few months later, and then the third rabbit, cvan, got ill. Took him to the vet and she out him on loads of thintgs to try and sort him out  as I was so worried. It turned out to be a change of diet due to me going on holidays when my rabbit ran out of food. so my mum changed it. I thought I was going to loose him that day.
Goes to show. something happens and you are looking pit for every single sign something is wrong and going to be fatal.
Insidentally Ivan is still with us going strong and had no sickness at all since :d

So sorry, Marianne, only just seen this! How tragic to lose a healthy young animal like that! At least you know now there's nothing you could have done to prevent it from happening. Only proves the old (Swedish) saying: "Don't disregard small wounds or poor friends" which I think is only too true sometimes mad
You've been so unfairly treated by fate in the last months. I'm sincerely hoping the new year will be a turning point for you, it's been too much going the wrong way for you lately.
Big hug, Karen
By Dill (*****) Date 09.12.06 23:25 GMT
That's so sad :-(

Not surprising you wouldn't have spotted a puncture wound in that beautiful plush coat.  Thinking about it, a cat's or kitten's tooth or claw are capable of carrying any number of bacteria and they are so sharp, especially on kittens, the wound could have been very tiny  :-(

Seems so unfair tho :-(

Hope things are starting to improve for you

Dill
