My home PC is dead! It coincided with McAfee crashing and being reinstalled. This happened to someone else I know. The people who are looking at my PC are saying that it has been caused by the new McAfee software being incompatible with Windows 98. They are also saying that McAfee are no longer supporting PCs with W98 on them.

Is this true? Could the new AV software have caused the desmise of my PC?

Thanks

I don't think so Loki, we still run McAfee on our PC's at work on Windows 98 (it may be an earlier version than you have) an it runs fine. Many companies still run Win98 and it would be silly for a company, especially antivirus, to cease support on the platform. You may have had a virus ? McAfee are a bit slow on releasing new virus updates.

Hi Loki,

My Brother has his own PC business , he repairs and builds them. He always uses MCAfee on them.

Excuse my slight PC anti virus ignorance but he says they are good as you can install it but select something which stops certain people knowing your business etc ..where you search, your profiles etc..

I have had it on 95 , 85, Millenium and now XP without any probs at all.

Mines is set up in a partition or something..

Hope you are fixed shortly and back up and running 100%..

Pam,

I think you are talking about a firewall, which prevents hackers accessing your computer. I think you need it if you don't have it. We have posted about it elsewhere.

My machine (W98) kept (sometimes still does) crashing and I am not at all sure it isnt Macafee doing it. AOL asked me if I had Macafee (I didnt mention it first) and they said it doesnt like AOL which apparently has its own virus thingy (very computer literate me :-)) and I know we have had to turn it off at work sometimes when running some of our software.

When I used AOL my pc crashed regularly regardless of what anti virus or firewall I was running on at the same time, since ditching AOL and going Broadband I've only crashed once and that was my fault! AOL is nearly as bad as some of the virus's we try to avoid!!! eek

I have a colleague who uses AOL and she has never mentioned a problem of this nature.

I suggest you go to www.web-user.co.uk and see if anyone there can help you.

Hi folx!

Fortunate <gg> to have a Mac - hard to hack and hard to infect (but by no means impossible). Did some research and ended up with Norton AV, which seems to be doing pretty well. Also on AOL, but restricted to the antique version 5.0 which is the best we Mac users can get without upgrading our entire systems to OSX. What I get frequently is a crash which seems to be caused by some sort of overflow from the download cache. Being a moron, I am not sure why it does this.

However, having said that, Macs are incredibly easy to fix after a crash (Good grief, even I can do it!). As for firewalls, I am informed reliably that you have to be a lot more computer-whizzy than I am to get them to work successfully! However, maybe someday! In the meantime, I save all my sensitive stuff to 100 meg zipdisk and store it in a box. Saves memory, too!

Snorri,

It's not difficult to load a firewall. Just follow the instructions on the box or the disc!
