My Labrador has two tail wags, side to side or round and round! What do they mean?

My dog 'flicks' his tail very slightly from side to side, when he is working on Rabbit. When he is working pidgeon, he moves it in very small circles. His tail is completely still when working any other type of game. I can tell what he is 'working' by his tail action :-)

If you watch your dog closely for a while, note what she is doing or what you are doing, when she uses a certain tail action.

She isn't a working dog (she wishes she was) but she is very fussy and the two different wags happen when greeting family members or pets. The wags are very large movements (they can stun a cat at five paces) but she doesn't have one wag for the cats and the other type for us! I have watched her to see why the side to side wag changes to round and round then back again, but can't see what would cause the change!

She doesn't *need* to be a working dog. I'm sure the reason is very subtle ;-)

If it's any consolation mine does it too - generally when she's over excited and we get what my friends little boy calls "blender tail" cos it'd chop, slice, dice etc :D :D :D Don't know why she does it - generally when greeting any of us normally she does the side to side thing. Interested if there is a reason why they change it if not happy to think she's in Moulinex blender training school while I'm at work! :D

I can tell what the TH is up to just by a flick of the tail (what there is of it). Usually when she's working it's all I can see of her :D
