Hi, took my puppy out for his first walk last night...where do I start? He either sat himself down and refused to walk either forwards or back towards home or jumped around like Taz on the end of the lead. I have accustomed him to his lead and collar over the last few weeks. Is this normal behaviour for a first trip out of doors or am I really ballsing it up? Advice would be most greatly appreciated.

Many thanks

Donna

its normal behavour for most pups one of mine used to scream pull backwards sit on the floor it looked really cruel. try taking a few tit bits with you if your pup walks even if its only a few feet reward him keep calling his name and telling him hes a good boy. I now start with mine at 8 weeks on the garden that seems to help because its somewhere they know take it a bit at a time. happy walkies.

If you can pick him up, do so complete with collar and lead walk a few yards/meters from the house, put the pup down and walk back home. Or if you have a large garden walk around the garden with him on the lead, praise when he does well ignore the playing up, encourage with voice and tapping the ground infront of the pup. I've never had one that did not get there very quickly once they have the confidence. Next week you wil be asking how to stop it pulling :-) JH

Thanks everyone, I had to carry him home yesterday, but won't be able to do that much longer as he's already 16kg, gave everyone who saw me a giggle though. Will try every day for a couple of minutes and fingers crossed we'll get there in the end

You'd be better of carrying him out rather than carrying him home - he'll start looking on the close contact with you as a 'reward' for his behaviour which wil make it hard to break :-(
