Im looking to take out car breakdown cover to include homestart roadside and repair at a garage if not able to repair at roadside so far I have got it down to three.
AA
RAC
Green Flag
Anyone have any of the above for breakdown and any views on them.
By the way I drive a Honda CR-V and have been told they don't break down often.

AA every time

Karen, it might be worth noting that
only the AA and the RAC have a dedicated work force.
All the others use garages to attend breakdowns.
Cheers Leigh,
Think im going to go with the AA with luck I won't breakdown but you never know.
Karen
Hi Karen
Check with your insurance company - some include breakdown as part of the deal (Norwich Union I think) and some car manufacturers have schemes. I have a Toyota and if you join Club Toyota it includes cheaper breakdown cover, including homestart

I was going to make the same comment as Leigh. If you're going to be travelling alone, then at least you can always tell the AA/RAC van. Other rescue services use Joe Bloggs garage. Would you feel OK with Joe Bloggs turning up in a pick-up truck at 1am?
I'm in the aa and have had to call them out twice - a very nice aa man came out to help. The first time, he came within 20 mins and the second time, it was about 15 mins. The same guy and he remembered me. The second time was because my suspension had gone going over those stupid disenfectant mats and the first time, he towed me home.
Would certainly recommend them.

Sounds painful :D

It was to my purse!

The AA do use Joe Bloggs as well if they don't have one of their own vans near enough, that was what happened to me a couple of months ago, ended up waiting for an AA chap anyway cos Joe Bloggs said he could not fix it and just wanted to tow us home. The AA would not clear it and sent there own chap who fixed it right enough, but it did lead to a much longer wait for us.

I recommend the AA. It costs me £111 a year. I have needed them twice this year. The second time I was relayed back home from the M40. They have satellite navigation now so they can find you easily.

A friend from the dog club recently needed help on the hard shoulder of a motorway (M11, I think). She told the AA which direction she was travelling in and that she was about a mile past a particular junction. They said they couldn't send someone to her because they wouldn't be able to find her!!!!!!!!!!!! If that's their service these days I'd go with the RAC!

Lynn, did she make an official complaint? If not why not

and who towed her off the motorway in the end?

I know she complained to everyone at the dog club. Does that count?

I don't know if she followed it up. I'll have to ask when I see her next week.

I think it was a puncture. It got sorted but not by the AA.

If she was a member and she was
denied assistance, then she should complain. Depending on the circumstances, she may be entitled to compensation

I'll definitely ask her next week.

after what happen to me in got 1year cover free.but i would not trust them again, but like you say good and bad on both side of the fence,
Im going to go with the AA.
I think you are always going to hear good and bad about the AA/RAC but from what I have been told I have heard more good things about the AA than bad.
Thanks for replys.

There will always be cases of 'assistance' going wrong, no matter who your with
I'm now with the RAC after the AA left me stranded for 6 hours in the dark on a lane in the Devon countryside, with a 9 year old child.
They say the moorland roads aren't on their maps etc but what use is that if you live in Devon!!! If I go out anywhere I have to cross the moors.
After changing to the RAC I broke down on the A38 and phoned them, they were there within 10 minutes but I did find out afterwards that a women had been attacked in the same spot the week before!!!

I didn't say that the AA/RAC do not use garages on occassions. What I did say was, that the AA/RAC have 'staff'. The other organisations
only use garages.
Sometimes the AA/RAC have no choice but to garage. Would you rather be left by the side of the road, until a patrol can be dispatched or would you rather be assisted?
Terri, I don't know what went wrong, but women and children always get priority.
Michael, you are right. They do have Sat.Nav but the system is not invincible and still needs to be given a 'bit of a clue' as to the correct location of the member.
It's amazing how many members do not know where they are :D

Steady Leigh, I was replying to Kate, (thought I hit the right reply button

) she appeared to think other orgs used John Bloggs and the AA didn't. I'm not complaining, they sent what they could at the time, didn't work out but I suppose it might have done and I do realise they can't be within an hour of everyone in the middle of underpopulated areas, I'll stick with them and in my experience they make more of an attempt to do repairs rather than tow you home and then leave you with a sick car and not much chance of sorting it before work in the morning

Sorry Isabel, did my post sound 'stroppy' .. lol .. Twasn't meant too honest :D
Do the AA cover the vehicle or the driver? I know the RAC do one thing and the AA the other but I can't remember which is which!!
thanks,

The AA cover the member
I don't drive but as a member, any vehicle that I am travelling in or on, if it happens to break down, will be covered. This also applies to my 15 year old daughter
Thats also another reason I wanted to go with the AA as I drive my other halfs car and my Dads car as well as my own so felt I wanted to be covered if I break down in any car.
Karen
>It's amazing how many members do not know where they are
I'm not good with directions at the best of times and didn't really explain where I was stuck very well. The woman I spoke to when I rang the AA was VERY helpful. When I drove past the place I broke down the next day, I realised I had actually told them wrong!
Helen

Hi Guys.
Check your cover with whoever you are with, because many of them will NOT transport dogs in their cabs, worth looking into if you have been to a show etc... you never know.
Dawn.
Cheers Dawn didn't think of that.

The AA/RAC will carry dogs, but it is at the discretion of the individual patrols attending, as to where the animals are carried.
A couple things to remember:
1) Patrol vehicles are very limited in size and were not designed to carry animals.
2) It is
dangerous to carry a 'loose' animal in a vehicle.
It's also worth remembering that not all patrols are comfortable around dogs and it is not part of their work contracts to be so
Leigh,
I told the AA operator that I did not know the name of the road I was in, but I was opposite Iceland at West Wickham and she told me she had it on her map. I think this is impressive. I didn't need to get out of the car.

Michael,
'Icelands' and 'West Wickham'
That's two pretty big 'clues' as to your location
The system is pretty amazing though.
I was surprised at how cheap it was, all things considered.
I know it is a god send to the patrols.
