Can any horsey people suggest a good fly repellent.
I'm using 'Naff Off' and some citronella stuff in a bright yellow roll on with little (if any) effect :-(.
My horse would be grateful for some respite from their torment :-)

personally I do not believe that any of them work, I sure have tried most of them! Best thing is to bring the horse in during hot part of the day & put him out in the evening/night time.

Hi Lara

I use Fly Repellent Plus (which is about £19) a bottle, it does last though as you dilute it..I find that is the best one..and I have tried most of them..

I also have a half fly bonnet for their face and then just the fly repellent over their bodies..

Hi, we make our own which works pretty well mix one bottle cider vinegar with 1x 10ml citronella essential oil bottle, 5ml teetree oil and chop up a couple of garlic cloves. you have to shake it before each use but it works better than most that you buy, also feed garlic as this puts off the flies as well. Let me know if you try it !

cheers Lorraine

Thanks for your help :-)
I'll try them both! I can bring her in but it was more for when I was out as she has the option of going in by herself if she wanted to.

Hi Lara

Have you tried putting garlic in his/her feed? It seems to work for me and my boy

Lara, you have to use garlic for a while to build up in the system, the best fly spray we sell is Gold label, only £4.95 and seems to work, try making the one I suggested though as it worked on mine and he is black (they seem to feel the flies more ) also if all else fails get a midge rug, worse trhing with those taking off rug and finding loads of dead flies in belly flap !!

We have a major fly problem every summer, with of all things, Cornish Tin Mine flies (In Essex lol) These horrible little **** bite the dogs noses and ears until they actually run with blood. The vet and I have tried just about everything possible, with no success. A friend who lives in Devon, suggested Lavender oil, not diluted, dabbed on ears and noses twice a day. This didnt cure the problem totally, but helped an awful lot. It dosnt help much keeping the dogs indoors either, as the flies come in and bite us too! Really wish I could find a total cure, but I dont feel I ever will, so each July is a pain in the *** :-) Maybe trying the lavender oil on your animals may help a bit too.
